Mary Elizabeth Stephenson Stilson, 96, of Davenport, Iowa, died Sunday, April 2nd, 2017 at Genesis East, Davenport. Memorial services in celebration of her life will be held at 1 PM Friday, April 7th at Koning Chapel, Ridgecrest Village, Davenport. Rev. Richard Miller and Chaplain Sue Houseman will officiate. Inurnment will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or to Ridgecrest Village. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting her family with arrangements.

Ms. Stilson was born in 1921 in Davenport, Iowa, the only surviving child of Edwin and Pearl Stephenson. She attended Pierce Elementary School, Sudlow Middle School and was a graduate of the former Davenport High School. She graduated with a degree in fine arts from the University of Iowa where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She then graduated from the Yale University School of Nursing with an MS degree and earned her MSN from Vanderbilt University. Ms. Stilson taught nursing later in her life, first for the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO and, upon her return to Davenport in the early 1980s, at the former Marycrest College, until her retirement.

She married Carter Stilson, MD in 1945 and to that marriage they had two children. She was an avid environmentalist, hiker, gardener, singer and volunteer. She loved Davenport, her family farm, and art. Intellectually brilliant, she was also independent and a determined Iowa woman. She was a skilled artist, who enjoyed print making, needlepoint, and drawing.

Survivors include her daughters Deborah Stilson Abbott and Sarah Stilson, both of Connecticut; and grandchildren Katherine Abbott, Laura Abbott (husband Jay Miner); and Stephen Abbott (fiancee’ Stephanie Gold).
