After three years of teaching, John was recalled to active military service during the Korean Conflict, and following one year of service, he returned to the teaching profession.
After the birth of their three children, John and Ruby moved to Davenport in 1956, where he started his own accounting and management consulting business, John J. O'Connor, Licensed Public Accountant, Professional Corporation.
He was Past President of the Accountants Association of Iowa and the Iowa Society of Licensed Public Accountants. Iowa Governor Terry Branstad appointed him to the Accounting Practitioner Advisory Committee. He was a charter member of the Society of Medical/Dental Management Consultants.
