John W. Warner, Jr., 94, of Davenport, Iowa, died Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Crest Health Care Center, Davenport. Services in celebration of his long life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Koning Chapel, Ridgecrest Village, Davenport, where his family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Ridgecrest Foundation, 4130 Northwest Blvd, Davenport, IA 52806. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting his family with arrangements.

Mr. Warner was born in 1918 in Davenport, Iowa to John and Maud Warner, one of eight children. He married Marian Brenton on November 14, 1942 in Dubuque, Iowa. He received his A.B. from Taylor University, M.A. from the University of Iowa, and Ph.D. in Mathematics from Ohio State. A professor at several schools, he taught for 25 years at the College of Wooster, Ohio in the mathematics department, of which he was chairman from 1979 to 1982. In June 1983 John Warner retired from the faculty. He was for some time director of the Summer School and acting director of the M.A.T. program. He has been active professionally in the Mathematical Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Ohio Academy of Science, and the Society of Sigma Xi. His special areas of interest have been mathematics education and applied mathematics. In 1970 he was elected vice president of the Ohio Academy of Science, Mathematics Section. He also served as program chairman for the Ohio Section of the Mathematical Association of America in 1965. As a math educator he gave numerous talks on mathematical topics to high school groups and was active in the mathematical preparation of both elementary teachers and high school teachers of mathematics. In 1981 he was honored with the John E. Wallace Award for Humanitarian Service to the Community. He has been an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Wooster and has served on many local church and Presbytery committees.
Survivors include his wife, Marian at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport; daughter, Lois (James) Bauer of Miami, FL; sons, John W. III (Ginny) Warner of Warner, NH; Paul (Lyndie) Warner of Phoenix, AZ; and James (Linda Robertson) Warner of Oak Park, IL; ten grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters, Grace Fowler of Williamsburg, IA; Marjorie Warkentin of Dallas, TX; and Mary Kemmerer of Santa Rosa, CA; and brothers, Paul Warner of Eden Prairie, MN and Timothy Warner. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son David, a sister, Jean and a brother, Gordon.
