Fred W. Clapp, age 90 of Davenport, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Genesis Medical Center-East Rusholme. Services to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Edwards Congregational UCC, 3420 Jersey Ridge in Davenport. The family will greet friends from 10:00 AM to service time Tuesday at the church. Burial will be held at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Aresenal where military rites will be accorded by the Davenport American Legion Post #26. Memorials may be made to Edwards Congregational UCC.
Fred was born in 1920 in Belle Plaine, Iowa to Edward and Helen Clapp. He was united in marriage to Jean Pyle on May 10, 1947. Fred graduated from the University of Iowa School of Dentistry in 1942 and practiced in Davenport for nearly 40 years. After graduation from dental school, Fred served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific and Iwo Jima during World War II. He was a member of Edwards Congregational UCC, Amercian Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of St. Ambrose alumni and University of Iowa Alumni Gold Club. Fred loved poetry and music.
Survivors include his wife, Jean, 2 daughters, Marilyn McCall (Irwin Alterman) of West Bloomfield, MI., and Beverly (Kerry) Strayhall of Davenport, 1 son, Jim Clapp of Davenport, 6 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Warren and a daughter-in-law, Cheryl.
