Urmey L. McConnell, 91, of Davenport, Iowa, died suddenly on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the Crest Health Care Center of Ridgecrest Retirement Village, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 7th, at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 9:00 A.M. until time of service. Burial will be held at the National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Memorials may be made to the Davenport Noon Optimist Club.

Urmey was born in 1919, in Bloomington, Indiana to Cloy and Mary McConnell. He received his BS degree in Agriculture from Purdue University in 1940. He married Gloria Griffith in 1953 in Des Moines, Iowa. She died July 18, 2008.

He was a veteran of the Army and served during WWII. He was Commander of a Field Artillery Unit in the European Theater obtaining the rank of Major. He was Vice-President of the Farm Mortgage Department of Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company retiring after 40 years of service in 1994.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Davenport Noon Optimist Club, serving as president for several years. His two passions were golf and bridge. He was a long time member of the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club and several bridge clubs with his wife Gloria and his closest friends.

He is survived by his daughter Linda (husband John) Glenn of Port Byron, Illinois; son, Lee (wife Carol) McConnell of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren, Dana Glenn, Brian McConnell, Jack McConnell; and a brother, Clifford (wife Jody) McConnell of Sycamore, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his brother, Julian.
