Warren R. Holm, age 88, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Monday, March 8, 2010 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport. Memorial services in celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday March 12, 2010 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady St., Davenport. Family and friends are invited to gather at the church from 1 p.m. until service time. Inurnment is private at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he was a member for 36 years. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Warren was born in 1921 in Rock Island, Illinois, the eldest son of Axel and Ella Holm. He graduated from Moline Schools and attended Western Illinois State Teachers College in Macomb. He married Vera L. Petersen on September 19, 1943 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Davenport. Warren and Vera had been married for nearly 60 years when she passed away on June 9, 2003.

Shortly after their marriage Warren was drafted into the U.S. Navy and served during WW II. aboard ship in the South Pacific. His duty included escort destroyer service for Admiral Halsey's fleet, awaiting the invasion of Japan through Okinawa. Warren retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1976, working 32 years as a toolmaker and tool designer and later as a program manager of small arms and aircraft weapons - including the M-16 rifle - in the U.S. Army Weapons Command.

Warren was a tireless "tinkerer," taking apart and rebuilding anything mechanical. When he wasn’t fixing something inside, he was outside "fixing" the yard. Together, he and Vera especially enjoyed traveling and hours of spirited card games with their life-long friends.

In addition to his church membership, he was active with the Kaaba Shrine, Trinity Lodge #208, and N.A.R.F.E.

Survivors include his daughter Sarah and her husband Peter de Tagyos of Santa Barbara, CA; three grandchildren: Pete (Tracy) de Tagyos of San Diego, CA, Brian de Tagyos of Atlanta, GA, and Dave (Anne) de Tagyos of Chicago, IL; three great-grandchildren: Rory, Zach and Lily; sister, Evelyn Silvy, age 90, of Kansas City, MO; and brother, Glen Holm, age 86, of East Moline, IL.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to our extended family of life-long friends, the residents at Ridgecrest Village and to the caring staffs of Ridgecrest and the Genesis East Cardiac Stepdown Unit.
