Percy J. Hier, age 80, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House-Genesis VNA. Services to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, March 11th at 10:30 A.M. at St. John's United Methodist Church, 109 E. 14th Street in Davenport. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 10th from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly and Jersey Ridge in Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Percy was born in 1929 in Springfield, Minnesota to LaForest and Ada Hier. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Snyder on September 14, 1952 in Des Moines, Iowa. Percy attended Hamlin University in St. Paul and later graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1956 with a BA in Business Administration. He was a pilot during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1956 where he flew cargo aircraft from Japan to Korea.
After discharge Percy began his career with Procter and Gamble as a sales manager, retiring in 1985 after 29 years. After retirement Percy enjoyed his many stained glass projects at the Creative Design Studio in Riverdale. His designs can still be seen at numerous facilities, restaurants and homes in the Quad City area. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church where he served on various committees, but especially enjoyed his involvement with the choir. He served on the Beaux Arts Fund Committee, which benefited the Davenport Museum of Arts (Figge). He also was a member of the Davenport Noon Kiwanis and was on the Scott Community College Foundation. He and his wife enjoyed traveling around the country and abroad, but Percy most enjoyed hiking in the Rocky Mountain Park.
Survivors include his wife; Marjorie, 1 daughter; Kathy (Michael) Lanphere of Davenport, 1 son; David of Bettendorf, 1 step-granddaughter, two step-great grandchildren, 1 sister; Dorothy Ostrom of Rochester, MN, 1 sister-in-law; Betty Hier of Clear Lake, IA, and 1 brother; Dennis Hier of Willmar, MN.
Percy was preceded in death by 1 brother; Darrell.
