Leroy Haywood, 66, of Davenport, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport. Services in celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, February 15th, at Temple Baptist Church, 3526 North Brady St., Davenport, where the family will greet friends from 11:00 AM with fraternal services conducted by Knights of Pythias at 11:30 AM. Burial will be 10:00 AM Tuesday in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mr. Haywood was born in 1943 in Rock Island to Jewel and Retta Haywood. He served with the U.S. Army. On October 25, 1975, he married Veronica J. Jacobs in Davenport. For 30 years he worked as an overhead crane operator on the Rock Island Arsenal, and for the past seven years for the Davenport Parks and Recreation Dept. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and G. G. Stokes #8, Knights of Pythias. He was Keeper of Records and Seals on the local level, Grand Keeper of Records and Seals for the State of Iowa, and General of Uniform Rank of North America, South America, East Asia, Africa, and Australia. He was well known for his skill as a bowler, and was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame. He also was a baseball player, from his childhood until he was in his fifties.

Survivors include his wife, Veronica “Chickie”; daughter, Karlene McKinley-Porter of Moline, IL; grandchildren, Jamaree Atwater and Elijah Porter; step-sisters, Vickie Mays, Hattie Crawford, and Aretha Crawford; and step-brothers, Nolan Shepphard and Taurean Shepphard, all of Davenport; and a host of nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law, his mother-in-law, and many friends.
